Homeless people are being kicked from their camp, and their futures are uncertain.

Sheriff’s deputies in South Sacramento are raiding an unauthorized homeless camp, and those who are living on those campgrounds must leave before authorities take more serious action. That means 60-80 people will be left scrambling to find a new place to live.

This decision comes after numerous people complained to local authorities about filth and crime on the campgrounds. Several of the people living in the camp have voiced their opposition to what seems to be a sudden decision. One person pleaded, “Give us a break and let us have a life for a minute.”

But local authorities feel those people living in the camp have had enough time to make other arrangements. One local official says, “the deadline has arrived and it is time for folks to go.”

It’s not clear where the majority of these people will go, if anywhere. Deputies say they tried to find housing for the campers, but were turned down at many places. Homeless advocates say they want to see the land turned into a sanctioned shelter, but the county says that could take years to come to fruition despite purchasing the land 11 years ago.

Deputies will be on the campgrounds for the rest of the day to make sure the site is cleared.
