The closest supermoon of the year will grace the night sky.

One of the most well-known natural occurrences of spring is the April supermoon, known as the “pink moon.” The moon itself will not actually turn pink, but it will be notably close to the Earth and take on a stunning bright gold color.

The April pink moon gets its name from Phlox subulata, also known as moss pink, a North American wildflower that blooms in the early months of spring, known for its vivid pink shade. In time with the spring theme, the pink moon is also known as the “egg moon” and the “sprouting grass moon.”

The pink moon should be at its apex size and brightness tonight between 10:35 ET and midnight, barring any clouds or rain. While those hours will be peak brightness, the moon will still be visible for a while into the early hours of Wednesday.

Based on projections, 2020 will feature a total of four supermoon events, with the next one occurring May 7. If you’re interested in celestial events, you should also keep an eye on the sky around the middle of April. According to NASA scientists, our moon will be in perfect alignment with Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars, which will create quite the spectacle.
