Xi is officially China’s longest-serving head of state.

On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping was officially reelected by the members of the National People’s Congress in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. The vote was largely ceremonial, with Xi running completely unopposed and an uncontested 2,952 to 0 votes in favor of having him continue to hold the position. With this reappointment, Xi has not only become China’s longest-serving head of state, he is also one of its most powerful individuals, if not the most powerful individual in the country.

Besides the position of President, Xi was also recently reappointed as the head of the Chinese military and the head of the Chinese Communist Party. Xi holds unchallenged power in all of China’s top governmental bodies, effectively making him the undisputed authority of the entire country.

To date, no Chinese leader before Xi has held the position for longer than ten years, even the country’s former most powerful leader, Chairman Mao Zedong. With the country’s presidential limitation rules abolished back in 2018, there is effectively nothing preventing him from leading the country for the rest of his natural life.
